The iPad: Why all the attention?
The new iPad has turned out record sales with over a million units
in its first month. So is it worth all the attention? Many of the features are nothing
new to the world of mobile computing, but what is new is that Apple is behind the branding
and design. Nevertheless, lets look at what you'll find under the hood:
- Apples iPhone OS: It incorporates a wealth of applications, but will never compete with
what's available on Apples mainstream Operating Systems. Nevertheless it does a great job
of doing more computing with less horsepower, a necessity for mobile computing.
- Touch Screen: At 9.7 inches the screen is slightly smaller than that of a typical netbook,
but it's format is standard aspect 4:3 instead of the more popular 16:9 making its resolutions
far more favorable to viewing web sites without endless scrolling. It's also the largest, large
production, touch screen consumer device that's sensitive to finger touches, without requirement
for a stylus.
- Wireless: Later models support cell-phone based internet connectivity with price plans running
up to $25 monthly for unlimited. All models support traditional wi-fi.
- Weight: At 1.7 lbs for the 3G (cell-phone internet) enabled model the iPad is very light, even
when compared with its fellow netbooks it comes in better than most.
- Battery Life: The iPad does well with usage all day. If you were to use it continuously I'd
recommend bringing the power adapter though.
- Cost: At $499 the iPad is right in line with NetBooks, but compared with most Apple devices
that compete with comparable products this one is much more price competitive than most.
- Form: With no need to fold out a keyboard the ease of use is high, but of course if you want
to do any significant writing (and are a touch typist) you'll quickly run into serious frustration.
- Durability: The beauty of its layout is a curse when it comes to protecting its screen. By
design it is perpetually exposed, and like all touch screens can be damaged if dropped onto
something that strikes the screen.
