How do I protect myself from viruses?
Answer: Viruses and Worms represent a significant threat to use of a PC. Originally viruses were more likely to be directly destructive, wiping out data, or damaging programs. Now their damage tends to be more incidental, like cancer spreading through the body. This focus on spreading, rather than direct damage makes modern viruses actually more dangerous. With a greater proportion of PCs interconnected through networks and a high uniformity in their operating systems the damage caused by viruses simply spreading is unprecedented. One high profile example was the Melissa virus. After wreaking businesses by swamping internet connections with unsolicited e-mails the virus writer was caught and sentenced to federal prison. In the meantime viruses continue to be a major threat, but ironically the cure is now often worse than the cause.
Many of the latest anti-virus programs now come bundled with Internet Security Suites. These add-ons attempt to provide solutions to other security concerns such as Advertisements, Firewalls, and Spam. Unfortunately the industries attempts have resulted in more trouble than help. The latest suites now become virtual advertisements themselves, constantly bugging users with cryptic questions about whether to allow or block programs you have running on your PC. Few anti-virus programs now come with just the essentials, but one of the best in our experiences has been AVG's Free Virus Scanner.
