Updates: Windows, Java, Anti-Virus and more.

Updates provide a valuable tool to fixing software errors on your PC. They also have a history of rendering computers inoperable and irreperable harm of the sort where reloading the entire PC is the only solution.

One might ask why software doesn't just work. There are three components to why they do not:

Cost: To save costs many developers keep standards during the early phases low, depending on revenues from sales to fuel their ability to fix it later.
Programs: Interactions with other programs can not be accurately predicted. Even with excellent testing, no developer can test all possible combinations.
Hardware: Each video card, sound card, network card, and motherboard has its own unique traits. Standardization minimizes conflicts, but like with interactions with software it is impossible to test all combinations.

So this leaves us in a dilemma. How do we use updates, and when? There are some updates we recommend because the risks are low:

Anti-Virus
Anti-Spam
Anti-Adware

These types of updates generally occur automatically. Note however that there is a difference between the definitions used to find viruses, spam, and adware being updated and the program itself. The definition updates are necessary, and relatively low risk. The program updates should only be used when the program refuses to update definitions without an update to the program or when it falls into the second category:

Nagware
Many commercial programs will now repeatedly ask you to update with no way, or no easy way, to stop them. While these are not safe to update, it becomes practical for your sanity. Of course its also worth considering whether you need the program at all, or if its better to just uninstall it.

Windows Updates
Probably the worst culprit for trashing your computer. Keeping windows automatic updates turned off can extend the life of your PC. Having said that when directed to, or when no other solution to a problem exists this can be a great tool for fixing problems.
