Getting off spam lists
There are two types of spam lists which can ruin your ability to use e-mail, inbound spamming, and outbound spamming.
Inbound Spamming
The happens when you are on one or more spammer's mailing list. This makes you the recipient of hordes of unwanted junk mail. There are split opinions on unsubscribing from e-mails. Some have experienced an increase, and some have found it solves the problem.
While spam filters can sometimes help with the problem, they often actually make things worse. This occurs because spam filters many times accidentally filter legitimate e-mails forcing you to check your spam folder as well as the regular folder. This puts you right back in your original situation, forced to read all e-mails coming in.
A completely effective method of stopping spam is to create a new e-mail account, preferably not just a first name as these get spammed all the time. And follow the following advice.
A very effective preventative measure is to never give your e-mail to a website or vendor, regardless of how much you like their services. This leaves you in a bind when it comes to ordering online, a situation where you need an e-mail address to receive a receipt at. Consider using a free online temporary mailbox such as www.mailinator.com. It's quick and easy to use without any required setup.
Outbound Spamming
When your e-mails are getting rejected you may have made it onto someone's list as a known spammer. This can happen inadvertently because someone using your mail server is spamming. Having said that the likelyhood that this is happening, unless its your own companies private mail server, are exceedingly small (perhaps 100,000 to one). Much more often this is the result of sending well intentioned e-mails which the recipient did not wish to receive. Again, spam is defined not by the sender, but by the recipient. If even one person receives unsolicited e-mail from your account, then you can be classified as a spammer, no matter how relevant you may feel it is to them.
