Is purchasing online safe?
The majority of online transaction systems use an automated credit card processing system, so first lets consider credit vs check and cash transactions.
Credit Card transactions remain a safer prospect for consumers than cash or check transactions because of consumer protections built into credit transactions. The most dramatic is that stolen is not gone.
You should always report a stolen credit card immediately, however your liability for theft and misuse of your card is quite small, and unlike stolen cash, the minute you report it your card is deactivated.
Check fraud is also a very real danger, and the impact of forgetting your checkbook can mean not only hassle getting a new account and checkbook, but a much greater danger for lost savings.
So if cash and check have increased risk, how do you manage your credit card risk online?
The first, and most important step, is to ensure that when you enter your credit information you see the lock symbol, indicating that your transaction is encrypted.
The second is to never, ever, under any circumstances, send credit information through an e-mail. E-mail, like phone calls, are not secure, and are vulnerable to monitoring and abuse.
Finally, always remember to keep track of your purchases in a record that you can reconcile with your bill later. While credit card companies have excellent policies for revoking charges in error or without your permission these only help you if you double check your bill for problems every month.
