Organizers: From Androids and Blackberries to iPhones and more
With communication on the go a critical service, and people relying on e-mail over voice communications more each day the value of an e-mail capable, compact, organizer/cell phone is rapidly on the rise. Before making the plunge here are some things to consider:
The Benefits
Speed: We're not talking about bandwidth here, we're talking about convenience. Comparing the speed with which you can read an e-mail and respond on a PDA's with even the smallest of netbooks is no contest. If you're answering hundreds, or even dozens of e-mails every day this can make a big difference.
Portability: Being able to slip into a pocket simply can't be beat. Since many modern PDAs combine the functions of phone and organizer this saves space even further.
Battery Life: While netbooks have pushed the envelope to make the practical for all day use, they still don't compare with what a PDA can deliver for battery time on a charge.
The Disadvantages
Browsing: While many PDAs now even support web browsing, it is a very limited ability, both because they do not support some of the programs needed to see web content, and their small display makes viewing many web sites impractical, or very time consuming. It's not a computer: PDAs do many excellent things, but ultimately they are unable to run the standard suite of programs that even Netbooks can support. This can leave you in a lurch if you need to view a document that uses a format or features that just aren't supported by your PDA. Interface: While the small screen makes reading difficult, the even smaller keyboard can limit serious or lengthy communications. The lack of easy selection on web sites (aka the ubiquitous mouse) makes browsing a much more challenging process as well. Cost: With both service and PDA costs climbing the value of e-mail on the run comes with a price tag, enough of one that it can leave you relying on the more personable phone call as the communication tool of choice.
