How do I avoid being a victim of identity theft?
The single biggest threat to your confidential information is identity theft. What most people don't realize is that it's not your PC or wireless network that's the weakpoint in security, but your trash can. The worst offender is the credit card offer that gets tossed in the trashcan, but bank account statements, bills and receipts can be just as bad. The good news is the solution is inexpensive and easy to implement. Buy a papershredder. While cross cut shredders are better, even a basic paper shredder will be a serious disensentive to all but the most dedicated thief, and lets remember, if they were willing to work at it to make money, they wouldn't be thieves.
Bearing that in mind there are some tips on your PC that can help as well. Always choose difficult to guess passwords. Don't use any of the following to create your password:
Finally do regular credit checks, these are required to be free once a year. Report any discrepancies, this not only serves as a first line of defense, but also resolves any problems when it's not critical. There's nothing worse than being in the middle of a home purchase and discovering an error that can cost you your new home.
