My e-mail stopped working. What do I do now? Troubleshooting Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Outlook e-mail programs
The most common cause of problems when troubleshooting e-mail is an incorrect setting. The first step should always be to verify that your settings match with those of your e-mail provider. Many settings can be found here
Another common cause of problems is the 2 GB limit found on folders for Outlook Express, and for all data combined in Outlook prior to version 2003. If your e-mail program will still open then you can prune your e-mails. It's important to keep in mind that attachments will constitute the vast majority of your used space. A large attachment whether it be a Word document or a Picture can be as much as 2000 times the size of a plain text e-mail.
Unfortunately if your e-mail does not open your best option is to revert to a backup. If this is unavailable there are a wide variety of restore programs available. Backups are always the best choice. You may find recent information missing, but you'll know what's missing, recovery programs can lose data at random, information you may never realize is gone. One of the best recovery programs, scanpst is bundled with Outlook for repairing damage to their data files which end with the extension .pst. Scanpst is saved in different places, the best way to locate it is to search for scanpst.exe.
