Why the desktop market is giving way to laptops
With miniaturization in computer parts, and low power components becoming steadily less expensive
the modern laptop is actually comparable to the modern desktop system if you are interested in two features:
- Battery Backup Power - For this the laptop exceeds the desktop as their battery will last hours as compared
with the minutes the desktop power systems last.
- New display - If you're continuing to use the old display from your desktop you can save money
There remain several downsides worth considering:
- Keyboard - The numberpad is removed and many models compress keys in awkward ways making large shift,
space, return, or backspace keys much smaller.
- Display - Most laptops have a smaller display than a desktop of comparable price, this can be mitigated by
keeping your resolution low (1024x768 for 4:3 standard aspect screens and 1280x768 for 16:9 widescreens).
- Touchpad - Laptops replace mice with touchpads. This is both the most cumbersome, and least important limitation.
For $20 or less you can obtain a nice compact external mouse that solves it, but if you don't you may find yourself
struggling with this cumbersome substitute.
