The Aircard. Is it worth the cost?

With high speed internet access covering a wider and wider region travellers are frequently left in a tricky dilemma of struggling to keep up with Joneses in the world wide web. With the advent of internet access through the same networks that provide cellular phone access things are changing, but not all for the better. Here are some of the pros and cons you can expect from cellular based internet access:

Pros
  • Internet access virtually everywhere you have cell phone coverage
  • Costs that are competitive with DSL, FIOS, and Cable rates
  • Compatibility with most versions of windows
  • Small size, the aircard is a standard PC Card small enough to fit in a pocket.
Cons
  • Transfer speeds vary, particularly in rural areas they can be substantially slower than broadband, though still noticeably improved over dial up
  • Sharing is difficult or impossible. Each laptop will need its own aircard.
  • Power will always remain a key issue. In truly removed locations you will always be limited by your laptops battery life.
  • Up front costs of $200 to $300, though contracts can't cut much of this.
